Hello David,
Welcome to the world of gun related engraving.
I notice your post of this on other forums and I’m sure you will get some input there.
What I have to say may be old stuff to you because you are not new to engraving.
But it may act as a reminder to you and a help to beginning engravers.

Cutting a geometric checkered background requires a lot of care and planning.
The outline borders where the pattern ends should be cut lightly at first.
The crossing cuts should be laid out straight and carefully spaced.
Each line should be cut from two directions to obtain an even depth.
Great care should be used to stop the cuts at the border to avoid run-over.
When the pattern is finished the outside borders can then be recut to final depth thereby removing any small nicks made by the point of the graver contacting the outside wall of the cut.

Hope this is some help to you and others, best of luck and thank you for joining our band of gun scratchers.

Best, John.
