Brass Finish
I am just about done engraving a Uberti replica Henry rifle.
Does anybody have any suggestions for a coating that I might apply to keep the brass from tarnishing?

Roger - You could spray coat the receiver with a clear Krylon enamel or lacquer, if you want to keep the bright finish from tarnishing. I would let it tarnish myself as it being a replica of an older firearm I would want it to look aged. But that’s just my preference.

if you're not talking about the entire gun, just the engraving- let it tarnish a bit. it might (would) show a pleasant contrast to the background if it were to darken a bit.

After I took the gun apart for engraving my customer sent all the blued parts out for shiney nickle plating. I almost have to put something on the brass to keep it shiney. At least for a while. Brass when coated with lacquer will discolor after a period of years. One custom gunsmith told me that he uses MinWax poly wipe on finish. I'll probably give that a try.

There are lacquers that are formulated specifically for brass that contain anti-tarnishing agents. These agents do not cause the brass to brighten but simply maintain the brass. The stuff I use is by Mohawk and is called "Lacquer for Brass".

Lauer type bake on finishes. normally they are the camo types used on military guns but i use the sating or gloss laquer in lieu of french grey
