Chasing Hammer Heads
I have just joined FEGA and received the Issue 76 of the Engraver.

I was wondering what type of steel you would start with to make and engrave such heads?

Any advice is most appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Steve

Hi Steven

And welcome to FEGA. I had the privelidge of engraving one of those hammer heads just recently for John Rohner. I'm pretty sure that they are made of mild steel. It was very easy to engrave. The overall length measures 47mm and the face has a diameter of 23mm.

Cheers
Andrew

John Rohner, one of the founders of GRS, gets a hammer head engraved for him - using a Lindsay tool to do it with? Our tiny piece of the universe has indeed come full circle..."

If your not gonig to use it for a hammer I would use 12L14 steel.
12L14 is screw stock and is a dream to cut. Getz muzzle loading barrles are made of it because of the consistancy of it. It can be Case hardened after engraving if you desire. Another good steel is 8620. 8620 is the steel that C sharps uses for thier recievers. Bill Gamradt will testify to how nice 8620 cuts . He has engraved some beautiful C Sharps actions. If your not going to use it for a hammer I would use 12L14 steel.
