Rifle scopes engraved
Has any one engraved rifle scopes? How about gold line inlay into the scope? What are the pit falls?

Thanks
Jim

hi jim .. i had a couple of request on engraving a scope and i turned it down after doing one of my own . the cross hairs in the scope can get damaged and then you have a bad scope i would turn it down or tell the customer you are not responsiable for any damage .. ron p.

Jim,
I've never done it but I've seen some done. From my gunsmith experience, I'll tell you that you would have to get real tight with the scope manufacturer. You would need to have them disassemble the scope and put it back together because of the seals and gas they use to fill them. Also, most of them are an alloy tube so an inlay would be out of the question as they need to anodized. There are some that have steel tubes out there I suppose but I'm not sure who. I've alos seen where an engraver would engrave through the anodizing but in my opinion that doesn't look all that good. It reminds me of "less schooled" engraving jobs done on firearms where the engraving was cut through the blue.
