| Does anyone have a good design for a standing vise? I'd like to make one out of 6" pipe to hold my vise so I can walk around it. I'd also like to be able to move it to another location from time to time, so I don't want to bolt it to the floor -(particularly since I'm installing radiant floor heat.) I used one last week that was bolted down to plywood, and it wasn't very stable. Suggestions? Thanks. Kate |

| Kate You need mass a large Steel plate( Min 1/2in thick1 1/2 ft sq ) with the pipe welded to it and then fill the pipe almost full with concrete, Lead would work better but cost a fortune. One idea |

| Kate, As you can see from the picture I built my pedestal from 4 2x6's..nailed together and capped off on both ends..you can fill it with cement or heavy stones or brick. The vise I have on the pedestal is a Ray Letourneau Engraver's Vise weighing 45 lbs. I can move the complete pedestal and vise anywhere in the shop by walking it across the floor. It was very inexpensive to put together. I have been engraving this way for over 30 years with hammer and chisel or power assist tools. Hope this will help. | i make a lot of custom supports and holders out of common pipe purchased at junkyards for pennies a pound. i cut he pieces to length as needed and form them in a hydraulic pipe bender. i then carefully arrange and clamp the pieces and weld them together. the tripod arrangement is super stable and doesn't weigh a ton. a metal shop could do this cheaply for you as no critical dimensioning is required. if you want a few j-pegs of my pods for ideas monk45@verizon.net i'll send you some real in spa rashun ! |
