| Bob, I normally like to cut the borders first so as to get them straight and in the correct position. I don't actually inlay the gold line until last so it doesn't get scratched or otherwise damaged. S |

| Hi Bob. I cut and inlay any FLUSH borders before engraving to avoid any sanding to flush them which may wear the engraving. It is also easier IMO to then restore the sanding pattern on the overall piece. If I am concerned about the polish on the borders being damaged I sometines cover them with clear tape while engraving. The channels and undercutting for raised borders is done before engraving but the gold is installed after engraving, again to avoid damage. The way Sam told you may work better for you. Give both methods a try on a practice plate and see which suits you best. Just two schools of thought, and Sam does great work. John. |

| Thank you Both ways make sense and I will try both ways on the practice plate that I have in mind. I plan on using silver for the practice plate which also brings up another question on a square where do you start the inlay from at a corner on in the straight? Bob |

| I've wondered about this for years. Seems to me there is not much difference in strength but I do start away from corners thinking there may be a little better strength and maybe easier to smooth down. Just supposition on my part but it works for me. S |

| Hi Bob. Like Sam, I start at the corner when the border has a right angle turn. Then I seat everything except the first .040 or MM of the line. That way, when I inlay the adjoining line I seat the very corner together with one blow on the punch. This gives me a very secure and hammer welded joint at the corner and no gaps. Also, I find it easier to have the channel facing away from me in a vertical position. I start the precious metal at the top and tap it in by "walking" the punch down the line towards myself.
