| Hi Joseph, I really hope you manage to find a class near to you but from your posting, it seems to me that your attitude isn't quite right. Engraving takes a lifetime to learn and I feel justified in saying that there isn't one engraver out there who feels they know it all or who isn't constantly on and off the learning curve at some stage or other. If you have a passion for the art you'll find a way to learn it, whether it's going the self taught route or taking a class thousands of miles away to get you started on the right lines. If you approach it with the attitude, quote 'to find out if I can do this,' I'm affraid you won't because for months and months you'll produce weak, maybe wonky scrolls and pissed lettering. It's at this stage you'll probably give up and think 'I never thought I could make it as an engraver, I'm glad I didn't travel all that was across country for a class...What a waste of time that would've been!' But you have to get through this stage and one day perhaps, if you've practiced enough and dedicated yourself to many hundreds of hours, you'll find that you think 'Wow, that scroll looks good,' or 'My shading looks a whole lot better than when I first started.' So, by all means give engraving a go but realise that if you do you're probably in it for the long haul and to get any good you can't play at it, it takes time and dedication. You've come as far as the FEGA website so you obviously have an interest in engraving so find that class, get those books and some gravers and give it a go but above all have fun! all the best from over the pond Marcus |

| Joseph. You got words of wisdom from Marcus. You have to be dedecated to engraving. It's a constant learning curve, that's what keeps it interesting. Take a class with JJ Roberts, he's a great instructor. You can't go wrong with him, he will put you on the right path to a lifetime of learning. Best of luck with your engraving venture. John. |
