Topic: Blue/Rust Remover  Number of Responses: 1

One more item that can be used for blue/rust removal is a product that I found in Home Depot. It is made by Klean Strip and is called Phosphoric Prep & Etch. Just like regualr blue remover (and Marty's toilet bowl cleaner) it is phosphoric acid and takes the blue and rust off a lot faster than naval jelly and with a whole lot less elbow grease. The one quart container was about $6.00. (Please follow the instructions and precautions.)

Topic: Certified Professional Status?  Number of Responses: 3

How do you go about getting your professional status? There used to be a section that explained that but I cannot seem to find it. What do I need to do other than be an FFL holder?

Topic: First gun  Number of Responses: 7

I am getting ready to begin engraving my first gun, a well used Browning BPS. I have already learned one lesson which is try to start with a new gun! Getting the receiver to a near flawless 600 grit polish was quite time consuming. These receivers are rather light and it seems that I will need to fill it with something to dampen vibration etc. while engraving. Other than the obvious (piece of wood and hot glue) any suggestions on what I should fill this with? Seems I read something on this site mentioning a "filler" made by Brownells but I cannot seem to locate it with a search. Also anyone who has engraved one of these BPS's that could provide some knowledge/tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Topic: Rudolph Kornbluth (?)  Number of Responses: 3

Many (about 45)years ago, I spent many hours with a library book featuring the firearms engraving artistry of a man whose name I best now recall was Rudolph Kornbluth. Did web searches using all the variations of both names I could think of and found nothing.

As I recall, most of his work was done in the early 1900's, and I remember being totally awe-struck by the images of his work.

Has anybody heard of him, or have I mis-remembered his named?

Thanks in advance for any info. Cheers

Topic: Who Engraved This Gun?  Number of Responses: 7

Who engraved this gun?

I have a Smith&Wesson 44 Magnum dating to 1955 or 1956 that was heavily engraved after delivery. The information on who engraved it is scanty...there is no paper trail. One rumor has it that it was owned by a General who returned it to the S&W factory after purchase for engraving. But, as I understand it, S&W does not engrave over its logo, nor over other stamped info on the frame and on the barrel. This gun is heavily engraved....floral pattern and the heads of 4 different animals (two on each side). The S&W logo is engtaved over as well as other info stamped into the gun metal.

Most engravers sign their work somewhere on the gun... but I could find no initials or name anywhere. There is however an unusual design on the rib(?) ... please see the photo... this design had one collector give me the opinion that it may be the work of Alvin White. Another told me that it looked like the work of a European such as Josef Fuger.

If anyone can offer me opinions on who the engrave could be, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Topic: Orvile Kuhl  Number of Responses: 1

I am looking for information on Orvile (or Orville) Kuhl, a firearms engraver who reportedly engraved many guns for clients of the King Gunsight Company, and for photos of examples of guns that he engraved.

Unfortunately, there is very little information that I could find from the "web". I came across one example of a Colt Woodsman with engraving attributed to Mr. Kuhl. Also, I am in the process of obtaing a Smith&Wesson revolver whose engraving is attributed to Mr. Kuhl. This revolver is accomanied by an old yellowed card from Kuhl and Kuhl comany that provides instructions on how to care for an engraved gun.

I would like to learn more about Mr. Kuhl and the guns he engraved. If anyone can provide info or leads, it would be greatly appreciated.
