I sent the FAX with a Credit Card payment for the dinner in Reno. Is there any way to find out if the FAX was received?
Looking forward to my first FEGA convention! Do we need to sign up for the seminars in advance?

Topic: undercutting chisels  Number of Responses: 8

I am inlaying some very fine gold wire and I cannot find a steel that will hold a fine enough point for undercutting the lines. I have GRS x7 ,GRS -carbide and some plain cobalt high speed steel blanks. The point must be very fine , about like a flat needle point. with a 30 or 45 deg angle. The carbide is working the best but will only hold up for about a dozen cuts. the GRS x7 doesn't chip often but the tip bends or blunts up real fast.
Anybody know any tricks??

You will note that on the Saturday at 8am is the Presidents/wives coffee (or anyone else). This is for the partners to get together while us members discuss business at the general meeting. The partners by the looks of it have the better deal!!!!

This is a good chance for the partners that aren’t involved in the guilds to meet and greet one another if they want to.

At the same time as the joint FEGA/ACGG there is also the SCI show which starts earlier in the week (23rd to the 26th) at the Reno Sparks Convention Centre. Normally there are courtesy coaches that go to and from the hotels for this. More information about their convention is available at http://www.scifirstforhunters.org (click the convention button on the left)

A Knife show is also on at the Silver Legacy Hotel at the same time as the FEGA show………(My apologies that I have forgotten the name of that guild, perhaps someone could remind me) If you are a FEGA member you get in free. Well worth looking at!!! But be early.

Here is some more information from Jan Billeb from ACGG……………………

This is the exhibition not to miss……the one and only time of the year when you can see the finest in quality engraved guns and visit with your fellow Guild members.

The 2008 Firearms Engravers & Gunmakers Exhibition will include a major display of historically significant custom firearms of the early 1900’s. Many guns from several private collections will be available for viewing. These include guns from the plainly practical to the lavishly ornate.

Available to see will be an Olympic-winning .22 from the 1908 Olympics, a Krag sporter owned by Townsend Whelen, and a one-of-a-kind National Match Springfield stocked by Seymour Griffin. Some of the greatest stockmakers of the early 20th century will be represented including Fred Adolf, John Dubiel, R.G. Owen, John Roberts, Thomas Shelhammer, Ludwig Wundhammer, Kirkwood, Pope and Zischang.

This display was organized in recognition of the 25th anniversary year of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild.

Famed shotgun expert David Trevallion will be attending, as well as other extremely knowledgeable collectors including Michael Petrov who will have books available to purchase.

Support the Guilds with your donation to the annual auction. Please send in the form to Bruce Farman right away or call him about your donation so it can be listed in the auction program. Reserve your banquet tickets by Jan. 10th. Tickets are $45 per person and include the cocktail hour, buffet dinner and auction. It’s a fun evening and the best time to relax and enjoy being with like-minded people.

Important – Make y our hotel reservations at the Silver Legacy and don’t wait any longer! Once the rooms in the room block (group code FEGE08) are sold there are no other rooms available in the hotel. If they are not all sold by December 22nd, the rooms will be available to the public and you may be paying for a taxi to come and go to the exhibition.

This will all be printed in the next engraver magazine which FEGA members will get before Reno

Cheers
Andrew

Topic: Help wanted for Engraver magazine  Number of Responses: 2

Hi Everyone

I’m working on the current issue of the Engraver magazine. Issue # 77 Jan/Feb/March 2008. This should be in your letter boxes before the Reno show.

So I need your help please………………………………….

There is a section that I’m trying to get going called “Around the Traps” show casing members work (see the last issue #76)

That means if any of you have photos of recent work you want in the magazine please send it to me. It can be a gun, part of a gun, a work in progress………

Or it can also be any other interesting project that you’ve been working on, not necessarily a gun…..this recognises the fact that FEGA members engrave other things than guns.

Don’t be shy about this……………it’s our magazine and the members want to see lots of photos of recent work. I know there are a lot of you lurking out there!!!

My e-mail address is biggschristchurch@xtra.co.nz

The only thing I ask please is that the photos be as big as possible so that they can print well in the magazine. If you are unsure, send them anyway and I’ll see what can be done with them…………PhotoShop can do a lot of things, but not miracles.

Anything you can send would be great thanks.

Cheers
Andrew

P.S. Hard to believe that Reno is so close. I’m really looking forward to it and seeing you guys again.

Topic: Beginner looking for powergraver tool  Number of Responses: 7

Hello, it was suggested I join this forum and start reading the postings and asking questions. So, here goes.

I came to working on firearms through my love of history and their association with history. Prior to that I worked my way through graduate school as a jeweler. What little 'engraving' I did was with hand tools. I've tried a little line engraving with push tools in steel and it is not practical (as I am sure you all know). Two weeks ago I tried the new GRS powergraver machine and was very impressed with what I was able to do in just a couple of minutes. The sales woman was rather impressed, too. Coming to my question.... to get started, what equipment do I need? I'm on a tight budget (school teacher with 2 kids) so I can't afford to spend more than necessary for the basic tools. If anyone has a used machine for sale I'd be interested. Oh, I have two Fordham flexshaft tools and am wondering if there is a hand piece that would work with one of them for engraving. Or, would someone be interested in taking one in partial trade toward a power engraving machine?

Feel free to email me: o.truitt@att.net

Topic: Accredited Engraving Courses?  Number of Responses: 1

Howdy!

My name is Ryan and I just joined the guild this month, I'm located out near Spokane Washington. I'm fairly new to firearm engraving and have been doing some jewelry engraving for the last few years.

Here's my question: I'm active duty military (15 years now) and have the Montgomery G.I. Bill at my disposal for educational purposes... I would love to be able to use it to enhance my skills and learn new ones in the engraving world. I already own a small business silversmithing and cutting gems and do the odd engraving job on the side, and I plan on continuing after retirement in another 5 years. However, the GI bill will only pay for accredited classes.

I've been in touch with the folks at Emporia State and they were kind enough to offer a single credit hour for the GRS intermediate class. That would knock about 200 dollars off the price for me, it's not a lot, but every bit helps.

Does anyone know of any courses offered in the engraving world that actually carry accreditation? I know Emporia state has the only degree granting course in the world (BFA w/ emphasis on engraving I believe) but it would seem that there must be something out there from one of the engraving schools. It's a bit frustrating to have a decent chunk of money at my disposal, but not be able to use it to further my education in something that I really enjoy.

Thanks in advance for your help, I am in awe of the skills represented on this site and within the guild. My hats off to all of you and I look forward to every step I can take to bring my own work to a higher level-

Cheers!

Ryan
