Topic: Engraving Replica Firearms  Number of Responses: 13

I'd like to first say thanks to those who checked out that 1911 pic I posted. I should have waited until I get the good pics from the photographer but I just couldn't wait....like a kid at Xmas. After watching the photographer for a couple of hours - the scaffolding of lights, backgrounds, and incredible feat of engineering just to get the shots he wanted I was able to quickly justify his bill for services. Anyway those will be up in place of the original in a few days.

As for my question. Re-investment is always a good idea especially when the investment is a smart one. I am putting a project to paper that would work perfectly on a Henry or 1873 Winchester. Of course I'm not about to touch an original but would a $1000 Uberti replica be worthy of months of work??? I've seen some incredible work done on replicas by great engravers but I'm not sure if those particular pieces remained in the engravers personal collections or if not, was the engraver actually able to recover his/her investment (timewise) considering it is a replica?

Topic: how to  Number of Responses: 6

I have seen reference to a How To Do book How can I get one? Also I'm thinking as for a 1'st project a Colt pocket pistol.
is it possible to restore the markings before I try to do anything to it. I thought I might be able to work the trademark with a dental pick But as far as the lettering I'm at a loss as to how I should do it

Topic: Standing vise design  Number of Responses: 7

Does anyone have a good design for a standing vise? I'd like to make one out of 6" pipe to hold my vise so I can walk around it. I'd also like to be able to move it to another location from time to time, so I don't want to bolt it to the floor -(particularly since I'm installing radiant floor heat.) I used one last week that was bolted down to plywood, and it wasn't very stable. Suggestions? Thanks. Kate

Topic: Our friend Ray Viramontez.  Number of Responses: 1

Good news! I am glad to report that Ray is just fine.
It had been posted on some forums that he was sick.
We talked on the phone for an hour this morning and glad to say all is well and the big storm created no damage for him.
He was out in his shop working on gold and silver orders.
He is still one of the best and most knowledgable suppliers of precious metal for engravers.
He made up a great little kit of pure silver for inlay by my students for over 20 years. Fine for practice by new folks.
You can reach him at SGTVIRA@aol.com if you need any gold or silver.
John.

Topic: Trouble with Sharpening  Number of Responses: 6

I finally received my equipment to sharpen my gravers and I was very excited to get started so I could finally engrave properly. I watched Sam Alfano's DVD to help me get started, which btw was very helpful, but I realized that I only have the 600 grit wheel for my power hone. Do I really need to start out with the 260 grit wheel to get the graver where it needs to be?? Also, he said that you should only use the ceramic lap to make the heel on the graver. Should I invest in that also before I start?? I tried to make the heel on the 600 and the tip just broke off. I'm not even sure how to fix that either. I just want to start engraving and I'm getting a little frustrated. Any advice out there??

Topic: Engrave-In Monday after Blade Show  Number of Responses: 0

Mark your calendar for Monday June 11th and add an extra day to your travel schedule.

Ray Cover and I are planning an engraving gathering for the Monday after the Blade show.

This is an opportunity for those of us interested in engraving to get together outside of the hectic show setting and share techniques, and engraving ideas just each other's company. Ray and I will be doing a couple of seminars, approximately 1 and half hours each in duration. We are still in the kicking around ideas stage, but the ideas we think might be the most benefit would focus on scroll design parameters along with something on shop design and theory. Of course, we will entertain questions of any sort. Midday on Monday we will have a dinner on the grounds, with smoked chicken and numerous other edibles from the excellent cook on my place, disguised as my wife.

We will have several different benches set up with all types of engraving equipment for those who wish to experiment with various options. You are encouraged to bring your own equipment and set it up as well, so that we can do some hands on instruction with your own equipment in hand.

This is event will be held in Monteagle, Tennessee, and on site camping can be provided, or there are several hotels 3 miles away. Actually the party can really begin Sunday night, as we are only about 2 hours North of the Blade show, and you are welcome to come up as soon as the show is over.

That’s the first announcement, we will add more as things firm up
